Doris finds comfort on a painful day
Doris, a 70-year-old retired woman, presented with acute back pain on her left side. While there was no obvious reason, the pain had progressively worsened over the last 24 hours. There were no other symptoms or significant medical history that would point to a pre-existing cause.
Upon arrival at BNE just before 11am, Doris was taken directly into our examination area where the triage nurse assessed her condition. Our consultant Emergency Doctor examined her, and ordered blood tests and a CT Scan. At 11.30am Doris was provided oral analgesia to control her pain. At 12 noon, she was escorted to the on-site Radiology clinic for a CT scan. Once the results returned from the CT scan and blood tests, the Emergency Doctor reviewed and cleared Doris of any serious diagnosis. Doris was provided with a management plan for her pain. She was discharge at 12.50pm to return home for rest and recovery.
“All staff in your emergency department were very professional and my needs were addressed promptly and competently. I also felt that I was kept well informed and consulted regarding my treatment. I would like to express my gratitude for such an excellent service.” (Feedback from Doris)
Susan’s stomach woes
Susan, a woman in her fifties, had been experiencing cramping, abdominal pain and nausea for almost a week. She has no previous medical conditions.
Suddenly one afternoon, her abdominal pain worsened, intermittently at first but then increased in severity over the next hour. By the time Susan arrived at BNE she was suffering from very localised constant pain across her lower abdomen.
Susan was nauseated but did not vomit. Nor did she have diarrhoea. She was feeling some chills and probably a fever.
Upon arriving at BNE, Susan was examined by one of our experienced Emergency Doctors. She was examined for appendicitis and gastroenteritis as possible causes for her distress. A series of blood tests were taken. As the pain and nausea had resulted in her not drinking much, Susan was quite dehydrated. She was given pain relief, anti-nausea medication and intravenous fluids.
After reviewing her investigations, appendicitis was suspected and the decision was made to admit Susan overnight for monitoring and further investigations. Susan was referred to a General Surgeon to receive ongoing intravenous fluids and pain relief overnight.
“This was my first time using this department and I was very impressed with the care I received from the staff that treated me. I would highly recommend your department to all my friends and family.” (Feedback from Susan)
Remedy for Dianne’s foot pain
Dianne, a woman in her thirties, stubbed her foot on a curb. Despite visits to her physio and a number of attempts to alleviate her pain (including strapping her ankle), Dianne’s pain increasingly worsened to the point when she decided to visit BNE.
Dianne’s foot was examined by one of BNE’s consultant Emergency Doctors who arranged an MRI on her foot within an hour of her arrival at BNE.
From the results of the MRI, our expert Physician referred Dianne for further investigation and management with an Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising is lower limbs.
“Unfortunately it was only my 7 year-old daughter and I; as my husband was at work. I was so worried about getting the MRI and leaving my daughter. The doctors and nurses went outside their call of duty. Not only did they look after me while getting treated, they went out of their way to ensure my daughter was comfortable and safe. From now on – I will never go anywhere else! Brisbane Northside Emergency was quick; professional, and had outstanding service.” (Feedback from Dianne)
