Dr Phillip Kay
Director, BNE

Dr Phillip Kay was the first Specialist in Emergency Medicine to enter the private sector in 1987 at Pindara on the Gold Coast. Since then, as well as consulting in business performance and strategy for a major health company with 26 hospitals, he has developed multiple private emergency units around Australia for different hospital operators. This makes him the most experienced private sector emergency medicine specialist in Australia.
Dr Kay has performed Director roles in both public and private sector emergency departments located across south-east Queensland. He is also the previous Director of Emergency Medicine at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane (a large tertiary university hospital and trauma centre), retiring in June 2023. Dr Kay is passionate about providing private patients with an alternative venue which meets their health needs and provides choice.
Dr Roy Mulcahy
Director, BNE
MBBCh, DA, FRCS, FACEM
In 2001, Dr Roy Mulcahy teamed up with Dr Kay to co-direct BNE. Dr Mulcahy has an extremely broad set of clinical skills, combining surgical and anaesthetic experience with his specialist qualification in emergency medicine.
Dr Mulcahy has worked in both the public and private sectors in Australia as well as in the United Kingdom.
Prof David Ian Ward

Prof David Ward graduated MBBS 1996 from the University of Queensland. He completed his internship and residency at Princess Alexandra Hospital, and then undertook five years full-time service with the Australian Regular Army. He is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Public Health (QUT), and an Adjunct Lecturer with the Centre for Military and Veteran’s Health (UQ).
Through his military and civilian careers, David has qualifications in helicopter evacuation, underwater medicine, military logistics, and pre-hospital trauma life support. He is keenly interested in research, and has published papers in international journals and presented at international conferences. He has a particular interest in drug and alcohol prevention, relating to his experiences as a Specialist in Emergency Medicine.
Dr Tim Harding
FACEM, MBBS, BAppSc
Dr Tim Harding graduated from Flinders University medical school in Adelaide before moving to Queensland where he completed specialist training in emergency medicine and obtained fellowship with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine.
He has worked throughout south-east Queensland in both adult and paediatric emergency medicine. As a senior lecturer with the UQ School of Medicine, he has ongoing involvement in the training and education of medical students.
Dr Harding has published original research in the Australasian Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine.
